2. How will I receive my certificate?
3. Are there any training courses for plastics welding for chemical tank fabricators?
4. What training is available for hot gas welding of thermoplastics?

1. How do I receive my examination results?
When you pass your examination, a Notice of Results will be issued from TWI Examinations within three to four weeks after completion of the course. If you have failed any parts of the examination, the reason for failure will be shown clearly but briefly (eg it might say 'insufficient technical detail'). This is usually enough for a candidate to know what he has to revise for his retest, but if there is any doubt, it is possible to contact the Chief Examiner at TWI Examinations and ask for some extra information on a reason for failure. He will provide as much information as he can without revealing any confidential examination material.

4. What training is available for hot gas welding of thermoplastics?
Plastic Welding School offers various training options for this process, which range from the Appreciation course, through to the Certification Scheme. Plastic Welding School can also deliver tailor made courses at company premises to suit the requirements of individual companies.

The 2 day hot gas appreciation course is designed to give those with no knowledge of plastics an insight into the process, the equipment available, the eventual possibilities of the process and a hands-on session to get a feel for hot gas welding. This usually results in candidates taking the next step, which is the Hot Gas course.

The 5 day hot gas welding course is again designed for the beginner, for example, apprentices or new starters, and aims to provide a good start in hot gas welding. The course contains theoretical information on plastics and hands-on welder training in PP (polypropylene) and PVC (polyvinyl chloride) in both sheet and pipe form, in various configurations. By the end of the course, candidates are expected to achieve a good level of understanding of the process.

The CWSIP examination course is for experienced welders, who must have completed an apprenticeship as a plastics fabricator, undergone an approved welding course or spent a minimum of 2 years as a plastics welder. The Scheme, which has 3 day duration, consists of a theory session to enable the candidates to take the multiple-choice theory paper, followed by a practical examination in the chosen category.

7. Do I need prior experience in hot gas or extrusion welding prior to taking the CSWIP certification course ATC68?
Yes, there are three ways you can go. The first is you need at least 2 years experience in plastic welding. Or second, you can take the 5 day hot gas course ATC66 and you need to weld under the supervision of a CSWIP certified welder for 6 months and then you can take the ATC68 certification course and examination. Finally, if you have gone through a recognized Apprenticeship scheme as a plastic fabricator you can take the ATC68 examination. Details about the requirements can be found in the CSWIP document no. CSWIP-PW-6-96 section 1.2
